Lauren Dale Rigg & Leola Pearl Palmer Rigg

Dale and Pearl

Lauren Dale Rigg was my grandfather. He was the third youngest of Thomas Townley Rigg and Miranda Gambrel Rigg He was born on March 25, 1884. When grandpa was a little boy and his older siblings had contracted Typhoid Fever, he was sent on a mission to the ice house to bring back ice. By that time it was a known fact that the water source was where the contamination was coming from. Grandpa had been given strict orders to NOT eat the ice as it would make him sick. Of course, like all little boys, his desire to eat the ice chips was greater than his fear of getting a deadly disease. So, he ate the ice, and he did get sick but fortunately for his branch of the family tree, he survived the illness. On January 9, 1908 he married Leola Pearl Palmer, the daughter of Marcellus A. Palmer and Susan Catherine Berry Palmer, at their family home in Leon, Kansas. Dale, as he was known to family and friends, was a Rural Mail Carrier. He began his service for the U.S. Post Office on October 23, 1909 and retired from service on March 31, 1944. From that time until shortly before his death he was active in farming and livestock. Dale and Pearl had 3 sons, my father, Lauren Howard Rigg and his two younger brothers, Frank Clifton Rigg and Eugene Palmer Rigg. Dale was also a state officer of the Masonic Lodge. He died on April 11, 1970. Pearl remained at the farm until her death on January 2, 1973.
