Louis Harold Rigg

Louis

Louis H. Rigg

Louis Harold Rigg was the fourth youngest of Thomas and Miranda Rigg. He was born on December 25, 1881. Louis was born at the family home near Leon, Kansas. His life was tragically cut short after he contracted Typhoid Fever. He was the second and youngest of Thomas and Miranda's sons to die of the dreaded disease, following the death of his older brother, Melvin G. Rigg. Louis died on August 21, 1895 at the age of 14 years and 8 months. He had just been confirmed at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Leon the May before his death. It was said of this funeral that it was a very quiet one due to the fact that there were six other members of his family that were ill with the disease. He is buried at the old Quito graveyard, only a quarter of a mile from where he was born and had lived his short life. In his brief eulogy the small gathering was told that Louis had gone on to be with his brother, Melvin, on "the evergreen shore." Originally I had spelled his name "Lewis" as it is on the family tombstone that was errected long after his death, but since that time I have uncovered other sources that spell it as I have here. His own mother spelled it this way in their family bible. It was spelled this way in his obituary and the recently added picture of him as a baby above had written on the back: "Louis Rigg". So I am changing the spelling to match the 3 different sources that I have found since beginning this website. I believe that whoever was in charge of acquiring the family monument that is at Quito cemetery either didn't know the correct spelling or didn't check with the maker of the monument to make sure that all names were spelled correctly. Of course, as always, you can agree to disagree with me on this! It was said of young boys of olden times that they ran like lightening through the fields, chasing butterflies, exploring and seeking things growing wild. There was no TV, computers or professional wrestling that they could watch. So they dreamed dreams and used their imaginations and thoughts. And by chance when the autumn breezes would blow they sometimes heard the sound of a train whistle far, far in the distance and their thoughts turned to a big new world that they didn't know. Louis will be forever young and full of the hopes and dreams of youth. And I like to think...running through fields.
