The following is a transcript of Maria's obituary reprinted from the December 8, 1887 issue of the Leon Indicator:

Maria Eliza Sloan, wife of A.N. Sloan, departed this life after terrible suffering at 1 o'clock a.m. Friday December 2nd 1887, aged 45 years one month and 22 days. The deceased came to Little Walnut township in January 1870, from Illinois with her husband and children and setttled on the land where she died. Rev. Abbott preached the funeral to a large audience on Friday afternoon, at the M.E. Church. He paid a high tribute to the deceased, who had been a member of that church from early youth, having been admitted to full membership at the age of seventeen. The deceased leaves a husband and five children, three of whom are grown, to mourn her departure. Br. Sloan desires through the Indicator to return heartfelt thanks to the neighbors and friends who so kindly watched with him and did all that was possible to alleviate her suffering.

Abraham Newton Sloan then married Narcissus "Nellie" Davis a widow with five children. Together they had a son. Abraham died on January 9, 1919 at the age of 78 years 5 months and 15 days and is buried in the cemetery at Ames, Oklahoma.
